How to avoid & protect yourself from lottery scams

Fake lottery scammers methods usually start with a message that they have 'selected' you from a list of email addresses or names. The catch is, you will be asked to pay a sum of money for 'fees' before you can claim your prize. You will also be asked to provide them with personal information.

But of course, no real prize award exists, once you have paid the processing fees, admin fees, legal fees, etc. you will never hear from them again.

Follow these simple rules to protect yourself.

	Never send money in response to email requests for such as: processing fees, agent fees, tax, service or handling charges before they release a prize to you.

	Lotteries do not send advice regarding winnings to players by email, they do not know who won because all tickets are bought anonymously.

	Do not ask for any documents or files as verification from them.They may send you a virus or malware.

	Do not send out personal information such as credit card or bank account information.

	Do not talk to them. The will try to convince you that they are genuine, they will also probably be able to find out more contact information from you such as your phone number.

	Residents of the USA are only liable for tax after receiving any prize.

	Do not be convinced by possible claims that they are representing a high profile corporation such as Sony, Microsoft, Coca Cola or Toyota.

	Do not be fooled by the use of a Lottery that sounds like a legitimate Lottery. Scammers have been known to use names such as 'National UK Lottery', the correct title is of course, 'The UK National Lottery'.

	When in doubt, remind yourself of this simple fact; You cannot win a prize if you haven't bought a ticket.

	Don't trust email messages claiming that you have been 'randomly selected' to win a prize, even if the lottery named in the message appears to be genuine, no legitimate lottery company would ever act in such an unprofessional manner.

	Do not respond to emails that ask for personal information, just report and send them to LRG then delete them.

	If you receive an email stating 'Winning Notification' or 'Lottery Sweep Stake' or a similar statement, be aware that it is not genuine. Official lotteries do not inform players how much they have won in an email and neither do they ask a Player for information such as; name, address or bank details.

	Please also advise your local law enforcement agency if you are receiving phone calls or other communications that you believe to be suspicious.
